Focus on Succession Planning
Jack Welch said,
“From now on, choosing my successor is the most important
decision I will make. It occupies a
considerable amount of time each day.” He made this statement
almost a decade before he retired. Succession
planning is defined as a systematic effort to ensure leadership
continuity for all key positions, retain and develop
intellectual capitol for the future and develop intellectual
advancement.
Corporate boards rate succession as one of the most important issues
facing them in the next decade. AbilityOne
producing NPAs also express concern about succession. This concern is
so compelling that the NISH board of
directors created a critical success factor in 2007 for NISH to develop
efforts to address succession within the NISH
organization and within the NPA community.
NISH invites NPAs to use its training as a major contributor to their
succession efforts. Significant research was
conducted to identify leadership competencies that are critical to
leading organizations. These competencies provide
a roadmap for
individual leadership development. NISH leadership
training and the leadership special
certificate were designed to help NPAs systematically develop
leadership. Once again, NISH is continuing leadership
course from Franklin Covey. In addition, NISH leadership
book clubs help hone the skills of existing
leaders as well as those of emerging leaders. |
