Customized Employment

Customized Employment (CE) includes resource ownership and small business development for people with disabilities. NISH and AbilityOne Community Rehabilitation Programs partner with local One Stop Centers, banks, and other community resources in customizing economic empowerment options for AbilityOne workers. These options are ideal for workers whose AbilityOne pay exceeds average community wages or for those who are looking for additional opportunities to participate and contribute in their communities.

Work Incentive Planning & Assistance Projects or WIPAs provide information and planning services about work and work incentives to Social Security and SSI disability beneficiaries. WIPA services are available in every State and Territory.

WIPA resources are available to all Social Security and SSI disability beneficiaries age 14 and over are eligible for WIPA services and beneficiaries do not have to be working, or even have decided to work, to get WIPA services.

WIPAs can answer beneficiaries questions about how part-time, full-time, or seasonal work would affect their individual disability benefits and other benefits that they may receive from Federal, State, and local programs.  To contact a WIPA in your state visit the Social Security link here:

Work Incentives:  Special rules make it possible for people with disabilities receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to work and still receive monthly payments and Medicare or Medicaid. Social Security calls these rules "work incentives." Below are the rules that apply under each program.

Government Affairs

The Government Affairs department strives to create and maintain the job opportunities of individuals with significant disabilities, conducts leadership in support of the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act, and increases awareness and understanding of, and preference for the AbilityOne Program.  This is accomplished primarily through the identification, monitoring and influencing of legislative and regulatory initiatives related to both procurement and disability policy.  NISH is pleased to share with you a link to CapWiz, an online advocacy system that allows you to deliver messages directly to state and federal elected officials and media contacts.
