Depending on the type of component you're using, different permissions will be available. Each permission type defines what a user is allowed to do within a component.
If you're working with collaborative components (those that display resources), including the Documents component, the Links component, and the Threaded Discusssions component, you can set three different types of permissions:
Read — Readers are allowed to view a designated component and all the resources within it.
Contribute — Contributors are allowed to submit resources to designated components. Depending on how the component is configured, contributors might also be allowed to update and delete resources they own as well.
Manage — Content Managers are allowed to publish, update, and delete resources in designated components. Content Managers are also responsible for reviewing and approving resources in a moderated component.
When setting permissions on resource-based components, there are several other options available that control content management privileges in the component. These options work in conjunction with permissions to provide more fine-grained control over the rights of each type of user. The following list describes those options:
|
Option |
Description |
|
Contributors may edit all content they own. |
Enables users with Contributor permissions to modify resources they submit. |
|
Contributors may delete content they own. |
Enables users with Contributor permissions to delete resources they submit. |
|
Content Managers can skip approval on content they publish |
Enables users with Content Manager permissions to publish resources directly to a component, without going through the approval process. This option is only useful when collaboration is enabled on a component. |
|
Content Managers can approve their own collaborative content |
Enables users with Content Manager permissions to approve resources they submit to a component. This option is only useful when collaboration is enabled on a component. |
|
Content Managers can modify permissions on this component |
Enables users with Content Manager permissions to add or remove security permissions on the component. |
All other components on the site offer Read permissions that control who is allowed to see it. The ability to modify properties and configure permissions on a component is determined by Edit privileges defined on the page where the component is placed.
To set permissions on components
In the title bar of the component, click the Edit button and select Permissions. The Edit button looks like this:
By default, Read, Contribute, and Manage permissions on a component are defined by the page where it exists. To revise permissions or further restrict access to a component, you should first review the current settings and delete them if necessary. If you want to remove an existing permission, select the check box next to it and click the Remove button.
At the bottom of the permissions form, click the Custom security settings option.
To add a new permission, click the Add Permissions button.
The Add Permissions form appears.
At the top of the form, select the type of permission you want to add. If you're setting permissions on a component that contains resources, you can choose to set Read, Contribute, or Manage permissions. If the component does not hold resources, there will be no options visible at the top of the form, as the only type of permission available is Read.
Next to Permission Group, click the Select button.
The Select Permission Group form is displayed.
In the Filter By box, type the name of the permission group you want to use and click Go.
Select the group you want from the list of results and click OK.
Note
If you don't find a permission group that meets your needs, you might need to create a custom group. For more information about building a custom group, see Create permission groups.
Click OK to add the permission or click OK and Add Another if you want to add another permission.
When you're done adding permissions, click OK to close the form.
Click OK again to set permissions.
